3 Easy ways to incorporate Chia Seeds into your life for amazing skin!
Chia Chia - the secret to great looking skin.
Chia seeds are packed with fibre, protein, and omega 3 fatty acids, as well as antioxidants. They are fantastic for our skin as well as our insides. There are many ways to add super healthy chia seeds into your lives. The 3 most popular ones in our household are:
1. Breakfast - depending on what we are having, I add them to granola, porridge and Weetabix. Chia seeds are tasteless so it's an easy addition.
Or if you have a breakfast smoothie, add the chia seeds to your smoothie. Just remember they become gelatinous if you soak them in liquid. This doesn't affect the flavour, just give your smoothie a stir before drinking.
2. Desserts - our desserts at home tend to be probiotic friendly, organic natural or Greek yogurt's, with chopped fruit and more probiotic friendly (about 50ml) kefir (I will write more about gut health in another blog) sprinkled with chia seeds and tonnes of organic cinnamon. Cinnamon is amazing as it can help to improve blood glucose levels by lowering insulin resistance. The reason we love it, is it also tastes fab.
If you prefer, you can just add chia seeds to ice cream and fruit.
Or if you are feeling a bit more adventurous you could make a chia pudding. It's super easy, all you have to do is:
add (60g) chia seeds to your favourite milk (350ml)
along with vanilla extract (1/2 tsp)
maple syrup (2-5 tbsp to taste)
cinnamon (we add lots but start at 2 tbsp and see how you go)
There are lots of variations to this recipe, (I also add organic cocoa powder or even Horlicks or other flavoured shakes) just add what you and your family enjoy.
This is best if you soak it overnight in the fridge (or for at least 4 hours) and only takes a few minutes to prepare, and then all you do is grab a spoon and tuck in.
3. Snacks - Homemade Granola Bars.
Again there are lots of variations, this is our favourite but just add what you enjoy.
Melt 4 tbsp coconut oil, 2 tbsp maple syrup and 3 tbsp nut butter (whichever you like, we use cashew / almond / peanut butter's) in a pan. Remove from heat, add the rest of the ingredients, which are: 300g porridge oats, 3 tbsp ground flaxseeds, 4 tbsp dried fruit's - we use dates and figs and 1 tbsp pumpskin seeds and 1 tbsp chia seeds- keep a few pumpkin and chia aside to sprinkle once it's been in the oven.
Mix it all together and press into a baking tray and bake in the oven for 10 - 15 minutes or until it's golden brown. Allow to cool completely before cutting into bar. These are super yummy.
Vegans can also use chia seeds soaked in water as egg replacements in any recipe requiring eggs. The gelatinous consistency works well as a binding agent.
